We’ve been experiencing some scorching days (and nights). And don’t we love to talk about it? Commenting on weather seems to be an all-time favourite past-time.
But warmer weather can be triggering for many, especially folk with (a history of) eating disorders.
Ellie Perkins recovered from anorexia in 2021, and has always found the shift in seasons - when the loose clothing gets tucked away - difficult.
She has 5 steps that help her to challenge her negative thoughts, and has very kindly given me permission to share them with you.
So if you’re finding the sun, eating and body image tricky you’re not alone, please remember:
☀️ You deserve to eat - even on bad body image days
☀️ Your clothes are meant to fit you (not the other way around)
☀️ Set boundaries around social media (hit the 'unfollow' button, take regular breaks)
☀️ Surround yourself with supportive people
☀️ Avoid comparing yourself to others - including what they're eating
There are things we can all do to help others feel more comfortable. Ellie suggests we try and compliment people on things that have nothing to do with their appearance. And to please not comment on someone's weight/portion sizes. (Ever.)
Thank you Ellie.
Sharing personal experiences of mental health helps normalise conversations about the previously stigmatised subject. This in turn helps people to talk more about their own mental health and ask for help when they need it.
