I love the sound of your Little Life Lessons project! Also, a big fan of napping although I think if I left a little pick me up next to me for when I woke up, my dog Honey, would have helped herself to it once she knew I was safely napping!
Love this post Zoe! And I am so glad to have found your Substack! Feeling all the feels here too. I am so curious about this Good Ship course. I've just subscribed to your newsletter and will be eagerly waiting and watching you draw simple things. No pressure btw! Just seeking inspiration to sit down and do the same!! ;)
Thank you Nina, it's great to have you here. So flattered that you've subscribed and are following along. I so recommend the Good Ship courses, such a welcoming community and I find all their exercises and advice super tangible and helpful for making work. Wishing you peaceful drawing times ahead.
Thanks Zoe--yes, so I found the Good Ship and am totally on board! It all looks positively delightful. Such a great vibe all around. Just have to (sadly) wait until the courses open back up, but they've got a lot of freebies in the meantime to keep me busy! Best to you too. Looking forward to following along!
I love the simplicity you bring to help your drawing habit! I’m also a fan of the brush pen and black and white drawings, especially when my head feels ‘full’ and can’t cope with making art material choices.
Thank you for the reminder to make making art easy! I need a sketchbook kit so I can sit down and commit to drawing instead of feeling bogged down by setting up my station. Also love the lessons our pets teach us, maybe I need to take a nap masterclass from my cats 👀
A sketchbook kit is a great idea. I’ve also heard of people leaving paper and pencils in different rooms at home and in different bags when they’re out so that they’re never far away from something to draw on. Oh yes, I’m sure your cats know a lot about rest!
Love this! Another good way to manage naps, it only nap for a maximum 30mins. 20 is ideal. Any longer and you get into deep sleep.
Another good trick is to have a cup of caffeinated tea just before your nap, you’ll drift off and then either your bladder or the caffeine will wake you up :)
Ahh yes different sleep phases and cycles are fascinating! I’ve read books and watched talks by Matt Walker and Nick Littlehales which were interesting.
Hi Zoë, I am so happy you enjoyed the course and have made a habit of creating. Looking after your mental health is so important. Thank you so much for the Good Ship shout out 😚 We really appreciate it. Hx
Ah thanks Helen, your courses are brilliant. I've enjoyed dipping in and out and back and forth to Fly Your Freak Flag and Picture Books. And the warm, supportive community you've created is a very happy place to be. Thank you! Zx
That is lovely to hear. We love the community too, we have made so many new friends through Good Ship. I sent Katie and Tania a link to your post this morning, Tania was so happy to hear you are a fellow napper 😂
I love this idea so much. I might try that as well. I have been struggling with connecting to my creative self since my daughter was born. And the many decision involved around creating art started overwhelming me and affecting my mental health but maybe pen and ink or something simple might just be what I need. What a joy to habe discovered your substack today 1🥰

Ah thank you, please do follow along. Oh Honey, perhaps it needs to be thought through but left in the fridge then! :)

Ah I’m so pleased and I know it’ll be well worth the wait when you start sailing with them, such a fantastic crew 🚢 💫
I’m already a huge fan of Vera, she’s got life sussed! 😁
She really has ! 💤

Thank you! Ah what a perfect description you've landed on there, my head often feels 'full'! 🤯

Ooh, those are really good tips. Now I won't have an excuse to skip a sketchbooking sesh! Thanks so much ✨
Hope it goes well!

Ooo thanks for the tips. Once I get cosy I think I would find it hard to only nap for 20 mins !
Fair point! I think the grogginess some get is due to waking in the wrong sleep phase.
Your idea of a snack is great 👍🏻
Ahh yes different sleep phases and cycles are fascinating! I’ve read books and watched talks by Matt Walker and Nick Littlehales which were interesting.
And yes always very keen to have snacks at hand !
Lovey little drawing! And I love your insights about napping 💤
Ahh thank you! I'm just woken up from a nap and enjoyed some chocolate ricecakes ☺️

Thank you Stefanie. Hope you find ways to help you manage the overwhelm, all trial and error eh?
